A Tough, Talented Middle Distance Racehorse – Winner of Over $450,000

A Gr.3 Winner and successful from 1400 to 2400 metres

Hurdy Gurdy Man commenced his career as a three year old, winning over 1400 metres at only his second start. His next start saw him elevated to city class, where he disposed of a tougher field over 1600 metres. After only four starts and never out of a placing, his owners decided to put him away for what was obviously going to be a promising middle distance career.

As a 4 year old he had eight starts, winning over 2000 and 2350 metres and running third in the 2350m Listed Warrnambool Cup behind eventual Gr.2 Brisbane Cup runner up, DANCE WITH HER. Hurdy Gurdy Man was never unplaced as a four year old.

His five year old season was even more successful, with a win and three placings culminating in victory in the 2400m Gr.3 Hobart Cup, defeating Tasmania’s hero, THE CLEANER by 1.3 lengths. The Cleaner went on to win another six races – principally in Melbourne – including the Gr.2 Feehan Stakes and the Gr.3 JRA Cup and running third in the Gr.1 Emirates at Flemington. The third placegetter in Hurdy Gurdy Man’s Hobart Cup, GEEGEE’S BLACKFLASH, was the eventual winner of the 2015 version of the race.

Hurdy Gurdy Man started off his six year old season with a bang, winning the Murtoa and Hamilton Cups before progressing to the 2200m Listed Ballarat Cup, running a creditable third behind Irish import THE OFFER, who went on to win the 2014 Gr.1 Sydney Cup.

Hurdy Gurdy Man’s next start, in the 2600m Listed Werribee Cup , saw him run second to four-time stakes winner, PELICANO. He followed this up with a second in the 2800m Listed Bagot Handicap behind OUTBACK JOE, who proceeded to win the 2014 Gr.2 Adelaide Cup.

Hurdy Gurdy Man rounded out his career with a third in the Listed Werribee Classic as a seven year old, being beaten by only 0.3 length by Gr.2 Alister Clark runner-up, CADILLAC MOUNTAIN.

Stakes won: $452,542

A Successful Sire of Sires

Although still relatively early in their careers, Street Cry’s sons are also proving worthy at stud.

STREET SENSE is the sire of four Gr.1 winners in the US and is the sire of Australian Gr.1 winner HALLOWED CROWN, as well as other stakes winners POLITENESS, SELF SENSE, HARD STRIDE and CHAMPAGNE CATH.

STREET BOSS has sired two Gr.1 winners in the US and in Australia, he is the sire of Gr.3 winner THE QUARTERBACK.

In New Zealand, Street Cry’s son PER INCANTO has produced Gr.1 winner DAL CIELO in his first crop.

From a Female Line Successful in Australian and New Zealand

Hurdy Gurdy Man is out of ABALONE – an Australian bred mare by Bluebird (USA) from Dinzamm (NZ). A winner herself, Abalone is the dam of four foals to race – all winners. Collectively, her progeny have won 20 races.

Abalone is a half sister to PERFECT PARADISE, winner of 10 races including the Listed QTC Edward Williams Hcp and is multiple Gr. placed, including second in the Gr.1 TJ Smith Classic.

Abalone is also half sister to the dam of Wanganui Guineas winner STRAIGHT CLIP and multiple stakes placegetters My Happiness and Happyto Keepa.

Hurdy Gurdy Man is free of Danehill – Danzig, being a descendant of the Mr. Prospector (USA) sire line and out of a Storm Bird (USA) line mare, with his second dam being by Zamazaan (Fr). He provides a valuable outcross to mares who hail from this prolific line.
